About the Typing Test
TypingTimer offers a free, no-signup typing speed test that accurately measures your typing ability. Whether you're a student, professional, or simply curious about your keyboard skills, our test provides instant feedback on your performance. The test begins the moment you start typing—no countdown, no delays—giving you a natural typing experience that reflects real-world conditions.
How the Typing Test Works
When you start a typing test, you'll see a passage of text displayed on screen. Simply type what you see, and the test will track every keystroke. Correct characters appear in the default text color, while errors are highlighted so you can see exactly where you made mistakes. The timer runs automatically from your first keystroke until the selected duration ends. You can choose from 30-second quick tests, 1-minute standard tests, or longer 5-minute and 10-minute endurance tests for measuring sustained typing performance.
Understanding Your Results: WPM, Accuracy, and Net WPM
After completing a test, you'll see three key metrics. Gross WPM (Words Per Minute) measures your raw typing speed by counting all characters typed, dividing by 5 (the standard word length), and calculating the rate per minute. Accuracy shows the percentage of characters you typed correctly—a crucial metric because speed without accuracy isn't useful in practice. Net WPM combines both metrics (Gross WPM × Accuracy) to give you a single number representing your effective typing speed. This is the most meaningful measure because it accounts for the time lost correcting errors. For context, the average typist reaches 40 WPM, while professional typists often exceed 70 WPM with high accuracy.
Tips for Improving Your Typing Speed
Consistent practice is the most effective way to improve. Start by focusing on accuracy rather than speed—clean typing habits build a foundation for faster speeds later. Use proper finger placement with your fingers resting on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and reaching for other keys without looking. Our typing practice mode offers targeted drills for home keys, numbers, and punctuation to strengthen specific skills. Try to practice for at least 10-15 minutes daily rather than occasional long sessions. Track your progress over time using the results stored in your browser. Many typists see significant improvement within just a few weeks of regular practice.
