About TypingTimer
TypingTimer is a simple set of typing tests and text tools designed to be fast, clear, and reliable.
We focus on standard measurements, transparent scoring, and tools that work instantly — without accounts, distractions, or hidden behaviour.
Whether you're benchmarking your typing speed, practising accuracy, counting words, or estimating reading time, TypingTimer aims to stay out of the way and give you results you can trust.
What "TypingTimer" Means
TypingTimer is designed as a benchmark, not a game.
Rather than gimmicks or inflated scores, we focus on standardised measurements so your results are meaningful and comparable — across different texts, sessions, and tools.
Your main score is Net WPM (words-per-minute), which reflects both speed and accuracy, not just how fast you can hit keys.
How Typing Speed Is Calculated
TypingTimer follows the international typing test standard used by professional tools and employers.
The 5-Character Word Standard
One "word" is defined as 5 characters. This standard exists so typing speed can be measured consistently, regardless of text content.
Metrics Explained
Gross WPM
Your raw typing speed before mistakes are considered.
Gross WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy (%)
The percentage of characters typed correctly.
Accuracy = (Correct characters ÷ Total characters typed) × 100
Net WPM (Your Benchmark Score)
Your effective typing speed after accounting for errors.
Net WPM = Gross WPM × Accuracy
Typing Tests vs Typing Practice
Timed Typing Tests measure how much you can accurately type within a fixed time (30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes). Ideal for benchmarking speed and tracking improvement over time.
Typing Practice is focused drills designed to improve accuracy and consistency — useful for practising punctuation, numbers, or core typing patterns before retesting your speed.
Text & Writing Utilities

Our Commitment

Tools should explain how they work. Scores should mean something. Privacy should be the default.
